Gallery Talk: Barbara Mann, 1967, and Yehuda Amichai’s Vision of Jerusalem

Monday, May 22, 2017, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Rosenberg & Winnick Galleries

Yehuda Amichai’s poem cycle “Jerusalem 1967,” composed in the aftermath of the Six-Day War, provides a frame to consider the city as a site of ethnic, social and religious difference. Amichai's poetic speaker imagines a city whose divisions are still felt by its residents, despite the enormous material and political efforts to bind the city together. In this gallery talk/walk through YUM’s exhibition City of Gold, Bronze and Light: Jerusalem between Word and Image, Barbara Mann (Jewish Theological Seminary) explores Jerusalem through this essential paradox in Amichai’s poetry, and through the city’s architecture and urban planning over the last half century.
